Sample Examples  ˗ Modified Format ˗ Statics Problems

Example 1:   A slender rod of weight, W, and of length 225 mm is placed in a pipe with an

inside diameter of 75 mm.  The points of contact of the pipe with the pipe are at  A and B.

The coefficient of static friction between the rod and the pipe is 0.20.   Determine the smallest value

of  θ  for which the rod will not fall out of the pipe.

Which of the following are true?

a.  θ = 30o         b.  θ < 30o        c.  θ  =  20.5o       d.  θ  =  25.5o         e.  None of these

Example 2:   Find the forces in truss members, BD and  AE and indicate if they are in tension

or in compression.  Also identify any zero-force members.

Which of the following are true?

a. FBD = 800N in compression    b.  FBD = 800N in tension          c.  FAE = 800N in tension

d.  FBD = 800N in compression   e.  CD is a zero force member  f.  No zero force members
