Sample Examples  ˗ Modified Format ˗ Solid Mechanics Problems

Example 1:  Pick the INCORRECT statement:  In torsion of circular shafts, we assume that

a.  cross-sections warp     b.  each cross-section rotates as a solid rigid slab

c.  longitudinal lines twist into a helix that intersects the circular cross sections at equal angles

d.  cross-sections remain plane and undistorted

Example 2:  The steel pipe has flexibility  f1 = 3 x 10˗  mm/N and is filled with concrete with

flexibility  f2 = 6 x 10˗6  mm/N.  The composite system (steel + concrete) is subject to a

compressive force of 80 kN.  Find the compressive internal force in the concrete.

a.  60 kN       b.  40 kN       c.  26.7 kN        d.  53.3 kN       e. 13.35 kN

Example 3:   Bar  ABCD  shown below is clamped at both ends and subjected to applied loads
P and 2P.    The bar has cross-sectional area, A and modulus of elasticity is E.  Find the
restraint load at end A.

a.  FA = P           b.  FA  =  ˗ P        c.  FA  =  0        d.  FA = P/2        e.  FA = ˗ P/2
