Hooke's Law for Brittle and Ductile Materials

 

Consider the specimen in a testing machine shown below.  Let the load, P, increase in value

from zero and measure the stress and strain.  The left figure shows a typical response for

brittle material.  The slope of the stress-strain curve in the linear˗elastic region is  E, the

Modulus of Elasticity also called Young’s modulus..  The right figure shows an elastic-plastic

material response which is an idealized model.  The bottom figure shows the material

response for a ductile material.
