Shear Flow in Beams

 

Example: * A shear force, V of 1600 N, acts downward on a beam with T-section formed by

gluing the top portion (200 mm x 50 mm) to the bottom portion (50 mm x 200 mm) as shown

below.  Find the shear stress in the glue.

                                            

                                                                                         

 

Strategy:  Identify the area, A’, from where the shear stress is zero to the location where the

shear stress is to be calculated.  i.e. The cross-hatched area shown below.  Evaluate  Q
recalling that Q = A’ybar.  Apply the relations for shear stress
