Deformation of a Circular Bar

*Example:  Bar  ABCD  shown below is subjected to applied loading  F2 and F3.

L1 = 1.0 m, L2 = 0.4 m, L3 = 0.6 m,   F2 = 15 kN, and F3 = 9 kN .  The bar has cross-

sectional area, A.  The modulus of elasticity is E.  Find the value of  F1  such that the

total elongation of the bar is zero.

Strategy:  Use a free body diagram to determine the axial force in each section of the bar.

Then apply the relation for axial deformation,  δi = PiLi/AiEi ,  for each section to determine

the deformation related to each section.  The deformations must then sum to zero.

          ΣFx = 0     FAB + F1  - F2 -  F3  = 0   and for the data:         FAB =  24 - F1
