The Specific Energy Diagram

 

In a Nut Shell:  Use the specific energy diagram to view transition during a hydraulic jump.

Recall the definition of specific energy is  E = y + V2 / 2g  =  y + q2/ 2gy2    The plot of

Note the loss of energy, hL ,  (energy dissipated over jump).

 

    y2  = depth of water after jump

 

   y1  = depth of water before jump

 

   yc  = critical depth of water

 

    q = flow rate per unit width   

 

Note further that q = constant
