Next show the resisting force and moment at section   a—a  in the figure below.

                      

 

 

              R  =    - 150 i  lb   =    resisting force at section   x = a

 

where  | R |  is the tensile axial force at the section

 

         M  =  - 2000 i  +  900 j  +  1500 k   lb in  =  resisting moment at section  x = a

 

         M  =  Mx i  +  My j  +  MZ k   lb

 

where the x-component is the resisting torque at the section

            the y-component is the bending moment about the y-axis at the section

and      the z-component is the bending moment about the z-axis at the section

 

Note:  R produces a normal tensile force acting on elements A and B

           Mz produces a tensile bending stress on element A

          Mx produces a shearing stress on elements A and B

          My produces a compressive bending stress on element B

 

Next calculate the components of stress acting on elements A and B  for the
resisting moment and resisting force acting at the section.
