Kinetics ˗ Body Translating in a Plane

 

 

Example:  Block, B, of mass, M, rests on a cart, C, of mass, m.  An applied force, P, causes the

block and cart to accelerate to the right.  The wheels of the cart are small and frictionless.  See the

figure below.  The coefficient of friction between the block and the cart is  μ.  Find the maximum

force P for sliding of the block to impend. Find the maximum force P for tipping of the block to

impend.   If  μ = 1/3 which motion impends first?

 

 

                              

 

 

Strategy:  Construct  FBD's of the block and of the cart.  Apply Euler's 1st law.  Relate the friction

force to the normal force for sliding to impend.
