Mohr’s Circle – Combined Stress for Example

 

Construct Mohr’s Circle for the element on the top fibers of the beam at section a-a

ashown below.

 

 

        

 

 

                                           

                               

 The maximum normal stress is the principal stress acting on face “A” of 3750 psi.

 

The maximum shearing stress acts on a face rotated 45o from face “A” and has

a value of  1875 psi (the radius of Mohr’s Circle).
