Open Channel Flow   Gradually Varied Flow

 

Example:   Consider flow along the horizontal channel past a sluice gate as shown in the figure

below.  Let  L  be of the order of  y1.

 

                              

                                      

Strategy:  Apply the energy equation and use specific energy plot to interpret results.

             

                            y1 +  V12/2g   =   y2  +  V22/2g  +  ( Sf  – So ) L

 

 

Case 1:  Neglect energy loss  ( Sf  – So ) L.   q = flow rate per unit width of channel

What size gate do you need for the same flowrate, q?  Look at specific energy plot.

Result:  y2 < y1
