Mohr’s Circle - Stress

Element oriented for Maximum Shear Stress

Rotation of point A on Mohr’s Circle to get to the point for maximum shear stress was 90^o

clockwise. So rotation of “face A” on the element is half that or 45^o clockwise. The figure

below shows the properly oriented element with the maximum shear stresses and related

normal stresses. (result)

Note as a check: σ_x + σ_y = σ₁ + σ₂ = 6 ksi+ 6 ksi = 12 ksi
