Mohr’s Circle - Stress

 

Element oriented for Maximum Shear Stress

 

Rotation of point A on Mohr’s Circle to get to the point for maximum shear stress was 90o

clockwise.  So rotation of “face A” on the element is half that or 45o clockwise.  The figure

below shows the properly oriented element with the maximum shear stresses and related

Note as a check:      σx + σy  =  σ1  + σ2  =  6 ksi+ 6 ksi =  12 ksi
