The figure below shows the distribution of stress at section a-a .  So the maximum “combined”

stress occurs on the top fibers of the beam.  Here the axial and bending stresses add directly.

 

                                     

 

where  σaxial  =  P/A  =  500/2  =  250 psi     I  =  (1/12) bh3  =  (1/12)(1)(23) = 2/3 in4

 

σbend)max  =  Mc/I  =  2500 lbin)(1 in) / (2/3 in4)  =  3750 psi
