Linear Impulse/Momentum for Rigid Bodies in a Plane

Example:   The figure below shows a body of mass  m  translating to the right on a horizontal

plane as a result of a force, F, acting at an angle θ on the body.  The body starts from rest.

The following data applies:   F  =  4 t  lb,  m = 2slugs,  θ = 30o.  Find the velocity of the body

after 2 seconds.

Recall the principle of Linear Impulse and Momentum as follows:

               t2

∫ Σ F dt  =  m vc2  -  m vc1

               t1

Strategy:

Step 1:  Draw free body diagrams showing all forces acting on the body.

Step 2:  Calculate the linear impulse acting on the body.

Step 3:  Calculate the change in linear momentum of the body.

Step 1:

Continue with this example.
